Philippe de Vitry (14c.)

This discography of Philippe de Vitry builds on the work first published in Fanfare in January 1982. In light of the limited attributions proposed in recent scholarship, the discography takes a broad view of the music contemporary with Philippe de Vitry in order to include as many recorded performances as possible without trying to resolve disputed attributions. The titles found in The New Grove Dictionary, Second Edition (2000), an article written by Margaret Bent and Andrew Wathey, have been alphabetized, designating six levels of attribution with letters from A to F, adding G for one work recorded from the Roman de Fauvel. Year of composition as usually cited is added, followed by the number assigned in Leo Schrade’s edition. The list uses triplum titles with motet titles cross-indexed. An appendix of other titles included in the two Philippe de Vitry CDs issued in 1991 is added. The discography has been refreshed from the original records and newly reformatted to match the Du Fay and Josquin des Prez discographies previously posted on this website.

The recordings of each work are arranged chronologically, citing conductor, ensemble, date of recording if known, and timing if available; then the format of the recording (ac, 78, 45, 33, LP, MC, CD, SACD), the label, and the issue number(s). Each recorded performance is indicated, if known, as sung with instruments (w/i), sung with no instruments (n/i), or instrumental only. Album titles of mixed collections are added with CD disc/track number (t.) or LP side/band number (b.).

Additions and corrections may be conveyed to the compiler for inclusion in a revised version of the work. Go to and click on ‘contact us’. A scan of a CD booklet that provides needed data would be invaluable.
